V.O. Smith



Mayor V.O. Smith is a lifelong native of Covington County. He is married Ada McGrew Smith.  They are the parents of three children, Neil, Lynn and Lana. The have nine grandchildren.  He is a member of First Baptist Church of Collins. Mayor Smith opened his first business, Smith’s Curb Market, when he moved to Collins in 1967. He owned and operated a Sears Catalog Merchants Store for 18 years. He also bought and sold real estate.  He was elected Alderman in 1977, then elected Mayor in 1981 and has served as Mayor since that time.

Mayor Smith is past President of the Mississippi Municipal League, which serves all of the 298 Cities and Towns in the State. He is past President of Collins Rotary Club. He has served on the board of several organizations including United Way for Covington County, and the Salvation Army for Covington County.  Mayor Smith was a member of the Collins Volunteer Fire Department for twenty-nine years.  He served eight years in the Mississippi National Guard.

Mayor Smith is presently serving as the Vice-President of the Covington County Economic Development Authority, Chairman of the Mississippi Service Company Workman’s Compensation Insurance Group, Chairman of the Mississippi Service Company (Insurance for cities and towns in Mississippi), Executive Committee for the Mississippi Municipal League and is Secretary and Treasurer of the Pine Belt Mayor’s Association.

Mayor Smith is listed with the Who’s Who in Mississippi and as one of the outstanding Americans in the South.  He has received an outstanding Economic Development Award from the Shadrock Rogers DAR and received awards from the Boys and Girls Club of America.  Mayor Smith was also inducted into the Mississippi Municipal League Hall of Fame.
